May 2026 District Newsletter

Dear Haverhill Families,
We are pleased to introduce the May edition of the Haverhill Public Schools District Newsletter. As we move into the final stretch of the school year, we have been working hard across all schools, and our students are ready and excited to showcase their skills, talents, and accomplishments at upcoming end-of-year events.
This is a meaningful time of year filled with celebrations, performances, assessments of learning, and important milestones. We encourage families to keep a close eye on both the District and individual school calendars for key dates and upcoming activities. We would love to share these moments and milestones with you as we close out the school year together.
We are also excited to share that during April Break, Haverhill Public Schools launched a newly redesigned district website. A few years ago, we partnered with ParentSquare—along with its integration of the Remind app—with the goal of bringing all school communications into one streamlined, user-friendly platform. On Tuesday, April 21, we took the next step in that effort with the official launch of our new website, which we believe will be easier to navigate and more accessible for families, students, and staff.
We also want to recognize that this week (May 4-8, 2026) is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please consider sharing a kind word, writing a note or card, or reaching out to your school’s PTO to see how you can help make this week extra special. At HPS, we believe we have the best teachers in the state, and this is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their dedication, commitment, and daily impact on our students.
We hope you enjoy the highlights of the past month, along with some information about upcoming events, in the May District Newsletter.

City of Haverhill Lead Hazard Reduction Program

City of Haverhill Lead Hazard Reduction Program
Lead exposure can cause lifelong health problems—especially for children under 6, who are more at risk due to everyday hand-to-mouth behavior.
The City of Haverhill is here to help! The Lead Hazard Reduction Program offers financial assistance to make your home safer by reducing lead hazards.
Who qualifies?
✔️ Haverhill homeowners
✔️ Landlords of 1–4 unit homes (built before 1978)
✔️ Homes where a child under 6 lives or spends significant time
Good to know:
If all program terms and conditions are met for 3 years, the loan may be completely forgiven—no repayment required!
Program requirements include meeting federal guidelines and achieving Full Deleading Compliance under MA Lead Law. Landlords must also prioritize families with young children when renting deleaded units.
Let’s work together to create safer, healthier homes for our children.

Exciting update from our classroom science project at Tilton Elementary!

Lily and Layla have taken their learning to the next level, spending time during WIN and going above and beyond outside of school to research and study the brain—an area they’re truly passionate about! Through this extension activity, they explored reputable sources, used simulations, and synthesized their learning into an impressive presentation for their science teachers and administration.
Next up: the heart! Lily dreams of becoming a brain surgeon, while Layla has her sights set on cardiology—and they are already on the right track!
We are so proud of their curiosity, dedication, and drive. It’s amazing what our students can do!

Bradford Elementary
We had some fun this past week celebrating April Fools’ Day at Bradford Elementary!
Mrs. Browner’s class headed outside with marshmallows carefully balanced on their palms, calling out for the rare bird known as the “Lipra Loof.” Before long, our clever students caught on—when no birds appeared, they realized “Lipra Loof” is actually “April Fool” spelled backward!
A great moment of laughter, curiosity, and fun learning!

Haverhill High School MCJROTC

Your Haverhill High School Marine Corps JROTC Physical Fitness teams had an incredible weekend competing at Admiral Halsey High School in the annual Youth Physical Fitness Test (YPFT) Competition against 14 of the top teams in the country!
Before the competition, cadets kicked off their trip with a memorable day in New York City—watching the sunrise together before heading into the city. They traveled aboard the Staten Island Ferry, walked past historic landmarks including Trinity Church and Wall Street, and visited the 9/11 Memorial, where they reflected on the importance of remembering that day. The group also experienced breathtaking views from Edge, 100 stories above the city, and spent time in Times Square before returning for the evening.
On Saturday, both the Boys and Girls teams delivered outstanding performances, earning 3rd Place Overall—an impressive achievement against such strong competition!
Thank you for your continued support of our award-winning program. We invite you to join us for our Annual Awards Ceremony on April 29 from 5:00–7:00 PM in the Haverhill High School Cafeteria. We hope to see you there!
J.G. Whittier Middle School
The Easter Bunny made an early pit stop at JGW!
Thanks to our amazing PTO, the building turned into the site of a massive egg hunt with over 200 eggs hidden in every corner. Our staff stepped up as professional egg hunters, bringing some serious competitive energy!
The excitement peaked when five lucky winners discovered the coveted golden eggs and hopped away with gift cards—what a win!
A huge thank you to our PTO for making it such a fun and memorable day at JGW!

Career Technical Education

In March, freshmen in Mrs. Johnston Biomedical Science class were fortunate to have two different guest speakers come into the class. First was Ms. Erica Pietrantonio, a Clinical Pharmacy Practitioner who spoke about her experiences doing home based primary care through the VA Medical Center in Manchester, NH. She discussed many interesting cases and gave a bird's eye view into what this career entails. Students enjoyed it thoroughly and asked many thoughtful questions. Just as measles has started to have more outbreaks in our country, our students also welcomed Massachusetts Department of Health Epidemiologist Julie Coco . She discussed how infectious disease cases are investigated and how outbreaks are stopped. She led students through a mock investigation of a measles outbreak. Students had so many interesting questions that we could not even finish the simulation in the class period! We are so grateful to these professionals for their time and willingness to work with our students and a special thank you to Associate Principal Victoria Lu for making Ms. Coco's visit possible. It was a great month for experiential learning!
Tilton Elementary
Tilton's staff and students teamed up with Team Haverhill's Clean & Green Team this afternoon to kick off Earth Month!

Haverhill High School
On Saturday, March 7th, four Haverhill High School students, Isabella Aloisi (Grade 12), Graydon England (Grade 10), Ella Lasonde (Grade 9), and Kaylee Mena (Grade 10) competed in the Massachusetts Regional Conference for National History Day at Stoneham High School.
Isabella, Graydon, and Emma each designed a tri-fold, while Kaylee designed a website, with each drawing on 25 historical sources, of which 10-15 had to be primary sources, to produce a thesis and an argument of 500 words to support their thesis through their chosen project medium. Having completed that work, each student was questioned by a panel of judges composed of former teachers and educational leaders, and members of local historical societies.
Even though Gateway districts rarely participate in these events, our students excelled: Graydon and Ella each earned Outstanding Project certificates, while Graydon has been moved on to compete at the state level this weekend! All four of the students had their projects praised by the judges and other attendees.
Congratulations to all of the students, for whom these were labors of love that they competed in their off time, and to HHS History Teacher Amie Aloisi, who facilitated the projects for these students.

On March 31, all 9th-grade students at Haverhill High School had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Ara Jeknavorian of the Armenian Genocide Education Committee.
Students learned about the Armenian Genocide, ongoing efforts to deny it, and Dr. Jeknavorian’s powerful family story of survival. His message emphasized the importance of education, remembrance, and ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated. He also emphasized the importance of acceptance, respect, and the celebration of the diversity represented in our Hillie community.
Our students were respectful, engaged, and asked thoughtful questions throughout the presentations. Thank you to Dr. Jeknavorian for sharing his time and story—and for presenting twice so all freshmen could participate.
Cartwheel

How do you know if your child could benefit from mental health support?
Sometimes the signs are obvious—but often they’re more subtle. Look for changes that last more than a few days, such as shifts in mood, sleep or eating patterns, or school performance. You might also notice school avoidance, pulling away from friends or activities they once enjoyed or increased worry, stress, or sadness. If you’re seeing any of these signs, trust your instincts—you know your child best.
Haverhill Public Schools partners with Cartwheel to help families access support quickly, including licensed therapists and psychiatrists within days. Services are completely free for families with Medicaid and in-network with most private insurance plans. Learn more or raise your hand for support at cartwheel.org/families.
